The big difference is the fold. A greeting card is folded once, so it has a cover, an inside and a back, and the size you pick is its size once folded. Invitations and postcards are single flat cards. Go for a greeting card when there's a message to write inside, such as a Christmas or thank-you card, and an invitation when everything a guest needs fits on one card.
Postcards come in A6 or A5 and are made for posting, handing out at events or tucking into an order. They're only ever laminated on the front, so the back can always be written on. If yours are being posted, the right side of the back needs to stay clear and light for the stamp and the address.
Greeting cards and invitations share four sizes: A6, A5, DL and a 148mm square. A6 and the square are the compact ones. A5 has space for a full day's plan at a wedding, and the long, narrow DL works well for a menu or an order of the evening.
Silk is smooth with a gentle sheen, and it's the board that takes lamination in matt, gloss or soft touch. A laminated card can then be picked out with raised spot UV or a gold or silver foil, which suits a name, a date or a logo. Uncoated board has a natural feel and is the easiest to write on, but it can't be laminated, so foil and spot UV aren't possible on it.
Invitations come in 350gsm or a thicker, stiffer 450gsm. Greeting cards and postcards also offer 300gsm Invercote, a very smooth, stiff board. If names or messages will be added by pen, choose uncoated or laminate the front only.
Envelopes are optional on greeting cards and invitations, in a standard 100gsm or a heavier 120gsm luxury, and greeting cards can also have red ones. Invitations start at 50.
Greeting cards fold on the long or the short edge. On a short-edge fold, check which half of the template is the cover before you start designing, as that's where covers most often end up upside down.
