Stapled booklets suit slimmer jobs such as programmes, menus and newsletters, from 8 to 72 pages. The total has to be a multiple of 4, cover included. Perfect bound booklets have a glued square spine like a paperback, from 32 to 450 pages, for catalogues, reports and books too thick for staples.
Wiro bound booklets, from 20 to 400 pages, use a wire coil so they lie flat and the pages fold all the way back. That makes them the one for manuals, training packs and recipe books read on a desk while you work. Where your page count fits more than one binding, choose by how it will be used: stapled is light to hand out, perfect bound has the square spine of a paperback, and wiro opens flat.
Inside, silk and gloss keep photos crisp, while uncoated is better for pages people will write on. Lighter papers keep a long perfect bound book slim, and heavier ones feel more solid. A stapled booklet can use the same paper throughout or a heavier silk cover.
For perfect bound and wiro covers, choose silk at 250gsm or 350gsm, or uncoated at 250gsm. Uncoated covers can't take lamination, and spot UV or foil needs a laminated cover. Bind on the long edge for portrait or the short edge for landscape.
If you want something to write in rather than read, Wiro bound notebooks and Diaries come in A4 or A5 with your design on a 350gsm silk cover, laminated in matt or gloss. You only design the cover. Notebooks have 100 lined or plain pages of 90gsm uncoated paper, and diaries have week-to-view pages on 120gsm uncoated.
With any wiro binding, the holes sit 9mm in from the edge, so keep text and logos away from it. A perfect bound spine doesn't open fully flat, so leave a wider margin on the spine side.
